1089PBS is safe from the hands of Bush

I’ve got a bone to pick with anyone who wants to cut funding for any sort of public service that is so heavily used in all realms of the population. Apparently, Bush set forth a plan that would cut a large amount of the subsidies that the PBS corporation receives, basically crippling it and causing it to diminish from its current high quality (in most areas) programming. Bush’s plan would not only affect the PBS stations, but also NPR, and other noncommercial public broadcasting avenues.
Congress created the corporation in 1967 to shield public broadcasting from political influence. The CPB distributes federal subsidies to PBS, National Public Radio and hundreds of public radio and television stations.
“It is providing a voice for America, a noncommercial, independent voice that is sadly lacking. It isn’t available any place else in the million channels on our cable networks,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Oregon.
I love NOVA and Garrison Keillor. Don’t take them away from me, Mr. Bush. If you need money for the war, tax cigarettes and firearms, but don’t ever mess with the only means of independent public broadcasting that we have.
